I felt great today slapping on a suit and heading to another interview, this time in Glendale, CA. The traffic was endurable, but dreadfully slothful. A fifty minute drive took nearly two hours. I must confess that I have been captivated by the class of vehicles I attempt to share the highway with here in Southern California. I assume that it was this way when I grew up here many moons ago, but I can’t help but calculate the probable purchase price of each newly fashioned auto glistening in the sunlight…none of which this morning seemed under $50k. It is no wonder the crowds assemble, buckled in, on isles of hot pavement we refer to as “freeways,” (why we call them that I’m oblivious) in order to get to a place of employment each morning to afford such a luxurious taxi. You kind of have to see it to believe it. I talk to many people here who spend up to four hours a day in their car, driving to and from work. Hmmm…four hours a day, five days a week is twenty hours; twenty hours, fifty-two weeks out of the year is one thousand and forty hours. Multiply that by ten years on the same job and you have spent a total of ten thousand and four hundred hours in your car - a whopping one full year and two and a half months in your vehicle driving to work…no wonder they choose luxury…it’s a second home.
Why, you may ask, do these people live so far from where they work? The answer is obvious, so they can live in a more affordable neighborhood so they can drive their luxury car. It makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? I’m being sarcastic , I know, but at least it’s something logical to think about while being stuck in traffic at 7:30AM while eating the exhaust of a 2011 Supersport Jaguar XJ…Yes, he and I were in line together for quite some time this morning…and YES I was envious of his car…this was one beautiful, yet mean machine. I instantly confessed my sin of envy to the Lord though, following it up with a personal request, with finger pointed straight ahead at the back of his vehicle, saying “one of those Lord, I’ll take one of those.” Call me crazy, but I was so impressed with this vehicle that I had to google it when I got home…I thought to myself, if a guy has to live fourteen and a half months in a vehicle, this would be my choice. After googling the specs, I couldn’t help but think how disappointed this guy must of felt being in a vehicle that cost him $120k and has the ability to go 0-60 in under 4.7 seconds, and here he was at a standstill on a freeway in front of me, completely unable to do anything but rev his 510 horse power V8 engine. But I must confess, it sounded awesome (it’s a guy thing) and he looked very cool in his second home (another guy thing)!
TOLD YA!!!!
